Pretty sure it's just to compete on the hiscores. By then... the player fully immerses his/herself into the world of RuneScape. 

Yeah to compete on the Hiscores. Race against friends and other people.

Hmm, I feel like that might have been true in the past when there were still 200M high-scores to get, but lots of people have received 200M's in different ways that I don't know how many people still play for the high-scores. I think this is just a personal way of accomplishing that goal for oneself in an interesting manner.
